The PC Cigar Rating System* Version 1.1 by Wolf Creek Limited INTRODUCTION Welcome to the Wolf Creek PC Cigar Rating System! This is the first program specifically designed with the cigar connoisseur in mind. It requires very little skill, effort or computer knowledge to operate. The PCCRS makes keeping track of the cigars you've smoked easy to find. It also lets cigar connoisuers rate them individually by preference in areas such as body, flavor, and worksmanship. With the growth in the sales and popularity of fine cigars, it easy to get lost in the sea of brand names. The PCCRS is a database program that will help you keep track of which cigars you've liked and disliked, which ones to buy again and which ones to over look for your own humidor. The PCCRS will also allow you to print a report on the cigars you've smoked. The predefined pop up lists already include over 120 Brand Names, the 8 different wrapper types, 15 Style and Size listings and 10 different countries. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS The PCCRS will run on any IBM PC, PS/2 or true compatible running MS-DOS 2.1 or higher, 512k of memory. The PCCRS supports monochrome, CGA, EGA, and VGA monitors. HOW TO INSTALL ON A HARD DRIVE AND START THE PCCRS Simply place your diskette in your diskette and type INSTALL at the A: The PC Cigar Rating System will create a directory named C:\CIGAR and will install all of the files on your hard drive and launch the program for you. Once the files are copies to your hard drive, simply type CIGAR at the C:\CIGAR and hit your ENTER key and the Main Menu will appear. To run the program from the diskette, simply type CIGAR to start and press the ENTER key. THE KEYBOARD COMMANDS The PC Cigar Rating System The PCCRS is requires only 8 input keys to control its commands. They are: ENTER The ENTER key allows you to activate a command or window when pressed. It also allows you to access a pop-up list file such as the BRAND file. In addition, the ENTER key also lets you insert predefined information and move on to the next step in a form. INS KEY The INSERT lets you add information to a file such as the cigar, country, brand, and wrapper files. DEL KEY The DELETE lets you remove information from a file such as the cigar, country, brand, and wrapper files. You will be asked to confirm any deleted information. F2 to Print Print the Cigar List (Your printer must be on line when you press this command key and will only work from the MAIN MENU and the CIGAR LIST windows. UP AND DOWN ARROW KEYS AND PAGE UP/DOWN KEYS The Up and Down arrow keys allow you to move vertically through the various lists in the the PC Cigar Rating System. The Page Up and Page Down keys move the highlighted area one full page forward or backward through each of the lists. THE SCREENS OF THE PC CIGAR RATING SYSTEM START UP SCREEN The start up screen is the first screen you see when entering the PC Cigar Rating System. There are only 2 choices available to the user, to enter to the Main Menu press the Enter key or to exit the program by pressing the Esc key. MAIN MENU This is the second screen you see when you enter the PC Cigar Rating System. This menu allows you to activate the Cigar List or update one of the 3 user definable look up files. The Update Cigar List command takes you to the Cigar List Window where you can add/delete/or make changes to your Cigar List. It is amazing how quickly this list will grow! The 3 look up commands are the: Country of Origin List, the Brand Name List, and the Style/Size List. These three files let you enter reaccuring information once and then recall it from the look up file lists. THE CIGAR LIST WINDOW The Cigar List Window is where you will do most of the work in the PCCRS. This window give you a complete scrollable list of the cigars you've entered into the system with views of the Brand, Cigar Name, Style/Size, Wrapper, Price, Value, and Country fields. From the CIGAR LIST WINDOW, you can add, delete, or make changes to the cigar list. To make a new entry into the cigar list, simply press the INS key. This will bring up the Cigar Entry Form where you can fill out the attributes of each new cigar. You can also delete a cigar from the Cigar List Window by pressing the DEL key. After you press the DEL key, you will be asked to reconfirm the deletion so that you can't accidently remove a cigar from your list! The Cigar List window also takes advantage of the Locate command and is positioned in the upper center of your screen. Once your personal cigar list has grown to the point of being larger that the screen allows, you can find your comments on a particular cigar easily by using the Locate command. For Example, if you wanted to find a Royal Jamacian cigar that you smoked last month, all you would have to do at the Cigar List windows is in the first 3 to 4 letters of the Brand name (the only active field in the Cigar List Locate field), in this case Roy and the highlight will automatically jump down to the first cigar with that Brand name! Finally, you can also print your cigar list from the Cigar List window simply by press the F2 key. Be sure that your print is on and active or the PCCRS application will close. The report printed will your cigar list by Brand name alphabetically with the date, page numbers and headings. THE CIGAR ENTRY FORM The Cigar Entry Form is activated when you press the INS key from the Cigar List view. The Cigar Entry Form lists each of the cigar's characteristics for you to fill out. The form offers you the opportunity to fill out the items or, on several items, you can press the ENTER key and choose from a list of pre-defined answers. For example, on the Brand field, you could type in a new brand name, or if it's one that you've entered in before, you can press enter at the blank space and a pop up list of brand names will appear for you to choose from. The Cigar Entry Form requires that you fill out * items concerning a cigar. They are: the Brand Name (manufacturer), the Name of the cigar (what the manufactuer calls it - i.e. Cetros, #3, etc.), the Style of cigar (corona, lonsdale, robusto) *note this can also be a size of cigar such as 7x47, the Wrapper color (claro, maduro, jade), the value (or rating you give the cigar on a scale of 1 to 10), the price (indiviually - not by box), and the Country of origin. THE POP UP LISTS There are 5 pop up lists in the PC Cigar Rating System. They are the Brand, Style/Size, Wrapper, Value, and Country lists. As stated earlier, each of these already has many pre-defined entries for you to choose from. The pop up lists are made up of 2 pieces, the list and a new entry form. To select a predined Brand, Wrapper, etc..., you simply have to move the Up or Down arrows keys to the desired name and press enter. The name will automatically be entered into the Cigar Entry Form and move on to the next entry point. You can also add to any of the list simply by pressing INS at the list view. Type in the name and press enter and the name will automatically be added to your list. All of the pop up list take advantage of the Locate command except the Value list. To find a Brand, Style, Wrapper, or Country, Simply type in the first few letters of that name and the list will automatically scroll down to that are or name. THE BRAND LIST The Brand List window is where you will choose the brand (i.e. Macaundo, Partagas, Ashton) of cigar you want to enter. When you are at the blank Brand line in the Cigar Entry Form press ENTER. The Brand List will automatically pop up. To choose a Brand of cigar, just use the Up and Down Arrow keys until you come to the brand you want and press ENTER. The brand will automatically be entered into the brand line and move to the next entry point, which is cigar Name. At any time while you are in the Brand List, you can zoom to any Brand name just by typing in the first 3 to 5 letters of the Brand name. You can also insert a new brand name simply by pressing the INS key. You can slo delete any Brand name simply by pressing the DEL key. You will be asked to confirm any deletion. THE STYLE LIST The Style List window is where you will choose the style (i.e. Corona, Lonsdale, Robusto) of cigar you want to enter. When you are at the blank Style line in the Cigar Entry Form press ENTER. The Style List will automatically pop up. To choose a Style of cigar, just use the Up and Down Arrow keys until you come to the brand you want and press ENTER. The style will automatically be entered into the style line and move to the next entry point, which is wrapper. At any time while you are in the Style List, you can zoom to any Brand name just by typing in the first 3 to 5 letters of the Style name. You can also insert a new style name simply by pressing the INS key. You can either use the formal style name for a cigar or the deminsions of the cigar. For example, rather than calling a ciar a Robusto, you can simply enter the demension of 5x50. You can also delete any Style name simply by pressing the DEL key. You will be asked to confirm any deletion. THE WRAPPER LIST The Wrapper List window is where you will choose the type of wrapper (i.e. Claro, Maduro, Colorado) of cigar you want to enter. There are only 8 different types of wrapper and they are all included in the list When you are at the blank Wrapper line in the Cigar Entry Form press ENTER. The Wrapper List will automatically pop up. To choose a type of Wrapper, just use the Up and Down Arrow keys until you come to the type of wrapper you want and press ENTER. The wrapper name will automatically be entered into the Wrapper line and move to the next entry point, which is Value. It is highly unlikely that a "new" wrapper will be introduced over the next few decades, however, you can add and delete to the cigar wrapper list the same way you add too and delete from the other pop up lists. THE VALUE LIST The Value list is where you can rated the cigar the easy way or rate the cigar the proper way. By pressing ENTER on the blank Value field of the Cigar Entry Form, the Value List pops up. From here you have the opportunity to select one of the previously defined values or press INS to rate this cigar on it's individual merits in the Cigar Rating Form (see below). By pressing ENTER on a previously defined value, that value will be entered on the Value line in the Cigar Entry Form. As with all pop up lists, any value can be delete by pressing the DEL key. THE CIGAR RATING FORM The Cigar Rating Form automatically pops up when you press INS at the Cigar Value List. This is where you actually rate the cigar you have just smoked! The Cigar Rating Form has 10 fields or cigar attributes to rate each cigar. They are: Appearance (How does the cigar look - well made, no blemishes, dry), Worksmanship (Is the cigar well made? Is it to hard or soft?), Draw (Did the cigar draw properly before and after light up?) Combustion (Did the cigar light properly or was it difficult?) Burn (Did the cigar burn properly during the entire smoke or did it canue or burn conically?) Flavor (How did the cigar taste? Was is just right? Too sweet, too bitter, too acidy?) Body (Was the body just right for your tastes or too light or too heavy?) Smoke Down (Did the cigar smoke well all the way down or did it turn sour? Did it go out all the time or burn to hot?) Band (Was the band worthy or this cigar or did it just look like something that manufacturer slapped on? Hey, presentation counts for something!) Box (Again, was the box worthy to hold this cigar or did you put it in the closet so your friends wouldn't see it?) and lastly, Price (This is really a price/performance rating. If you thought a cigar was great but it cost to much rate it as such. Or if your thought that the cigar was good but wasn't worth the $12.50 price tag, rate it on those merits.) The over all cigar value will automatically be calculated for you one the final field (Price) is finished. Just Press enter to return to the Value List. Press Enter again to return to the Cigar Entry Form. THE COUNTRY LIST The Country List window is where you will choose the Country (i.e. Dominican Republic, Jamaica, Cuba) of cigar you want to enter. When you are at the blank Country line in the Cigar Entry Form press ENTER. The Country List will automatically pop up. To choose a Country of cigar, just use the Up and Down Arrow keys until you come to the Country's abbreviation you want and press ENTER. The country's abbreviation will automatically be entered into the country line and move to the next entry point, which is cigar Name. At any time while you are in the Country List, you can zoom to any Country's abbreviatione just by typing in the first 1 to 2 letters of the country's name. You can also insert a new bcountry's abbreviation to the list simply by pressing the INS key. You can also delete any country simply by pressing the DEL key.
